Michigan iGaming Surpasses Previous Monthly Revenue Record

The sports betting and iGaming business in Michigan experienced a 22% growth in January, bringing in a total of $229.6 million in gross online gambling income. Major events like the NFL Super Bowl and regional championship games continue to drive sports betting activity in the state, even if there has been a minor decline in online sports betting transactions since December. This impressive achievement is indicative of a larger state-wide trend.

In January, Michigan iGaming Reached a Record High

Michigan's overall taxable revenue for the month of January reached a record high. The Michigan Gaming Control Board brought in $181.9 million for the month under review. Together, sports betting and iGaming brought in $229.6 million in gambling income in January.

In other words, this year's $187.3 million was received by the state in the same month last year, a decrease of 22.3%.

The state of Michigan set a record in 2023 when its total gross receipts from sports betting and iGaming reached a record $2.3 billion. The January data support this trend.

But the real fireworks occurred with teams like the Detroit Lions, who were playing in the NFC title game in January, and the Michigan Wolverines, who hadn't won a national championship since 1997.

Online sports betting handled $583 million in December, but the $577.4 million made in January was still less, thus the totals went up overall.

Commercial and tribal license holders in Michigan were counted in January.

Michigan's Revenue Distribution and Tax Contributions

The $31.3 million in revenue that was sent to Michigan on schedule in January was made up of taxes and fees. Taxes and fees totaling $30 million from iGaming were also received, along with $1.3 million from online sports betting.

Detroit City inaugurated its three casinos in January, and the city's service money and taxes brought in $8.5 million. However, there were also internet casinos that made $7.9 million and sports portals that made $614,400 every year.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board claims that tribal operators have paid the State $3.6 million in taxes and fees.

Online Gaming Boom: Detroit's Land-Based Revenue Drops

Consumers in Detroit seem to prefer online gambling and sportsbooks over those that are physically based. This preference is evident when comparing land-based operators' January income to that of 2023.

In-person retail activity at physical stores across the country is declining. According to a research by Casino.org, there was a decline in in-person casino play in January 2023 in at least five additional states.

Over the past year, Michigan has focused on expanding the sports betting and online gambling industries. Online gambling and sports betting are now permitted in Michigan for fifteen commercial and tribal companies. All fifteen of them began their iGaming businesses.
